NUTRIENTS

They are the substances contained in food.

The main types of nutrients are carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals.

• Carbohydrates: give us energy. (Bread, rice, pasta, potatoes and pulses)

• Fats: give us a lot of energy. (Butter, bacon, oil, sausages, chocolate, sweets, hamburgers and cakes)

• Proteins: help us to grow and repair our body. (Meat, fish, eggs, dairy products and pulses)

• Vitamins and minerals: help us to stay healthy. (Fruit, vegetables and dairy products)

DIGESTION AND THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

Digestion is the process of obtaining  nutrients from the food we eat.

* Remember: some carbohydrates are sweet and are found in sugar and honey. 

Chocolate, sweets, cakes, sausages and hamburgers also contain fats
